There’s a phrase I hear from many women approaching menopause:
“I’m exhausted… but I can’t properly relax.”
They feel drained all day, yet when they finally sit down or get into bed, their mind is still racing.
Or they wake feeling tired but somehow still “on edge”.
This confusing mix of feeling wired and exhausted at the same time is incredibly common during perimenopause and menopause.
It can make women feel as if their body has suddenly changed in ways they don’t understand.
But it usually isn’t random.
Very often it’s the body signalling that it has been under pressure for longer than it can comfortably manage.
Why the Body Can Feel Wired and Tired
Your body has a natural stress response system designed to keep you safe.
When something requires attention or adaptation — whether it’s emotional stress, poor sleep, blood sugar swings, illness, or hormonal changes — the body releases stress hormones to help you cope.
In the short term, this response is helpful.
But when the system has to keep adjusting for long periods of time, the body can become stuck in a state where it is:
Running on stress hormones while the rest of the system is exhausted.
That’s when women often describe feeling:
- tired but unable to switch off
- wired at night but drained during the day
- mentally alert but physically depleted
Why This Happens More in Perimenopause
During perimenopause, hormone levels naturally fluctuate.
These changes can make the nervous system more sensitive to stress signals.
Pressures that your body may previously have handled quite easily can suddenly feel much harder to regulate.
Pressures that your body may previously have handled quite easily can suddenly feel much harder to regulate.
This doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong.
It simply means the body may now need more recovery and support than it used to.
The Stress Bowl Connection
In my work I often explain this using the idea of a Stress Bowl.
Every pressure on the body goes into the same bowl:
- emotional stress
- digestion issues
- blood sugar swings
- sleep disruption
- hormonal changes
- long-term responsibilities and life pressures
When the bowl becomes too full, the body begins to signal that it needs more support.
Feeling wired but exhausted is often one of the early signs that the system is struggling to keep up with everything it’s carrying.
The good news is that the bowl doesn’t need to be emptied completely.
Often creating a little more space in the system is enough for the body to begin regulating again.
When the Body Starts to Settle
As pressure on the system reduces, women often begin to notice small but important changes:
- falling asleep more easily
- feeling calmer in the evenings
- energy gradually improving during the day
- digestion becoming more predictable
The body hasn’t suddenly been “fixed”.
It has simply had enough space to start regulating again.
A Gentle Next Step
If you’re feeling wired and exhausted at the same time, it can sometimes help to look at what your body is currently carrying rather than focusing on one symptom alone.
The BEES Stressor Map is a simple tool that helps identify some of the pressures that may be filling your stress bowl.
Many women find that once they can see the bigger picture, their symptoms begin to make much more sense.
🌿 Does this sound familiar?
Many women arrive here feeling confused by symptoms that don’t seem connected — poor sleep, bloating, anxiety, fatigue.
Often these are signals that the body is carrying more pressure than it can comfortably manage.
I sometimes describe my role as being a Menopause Translator, helping women understand what their body may be trying to tell them.
